TEAS 7 Practice Test
📊 Official ATI TEAS Proficiency Levels
Most nursing programs require a composite score of 58%–65% or higher. Top programs often require 70%+. Always check your specific program's requirements.
Reading
45 questions · 55 minutes · Key Ideas, Craft & Structure, Integration of Knowledge
The Reading section tests your ability to comprehend, analyze, and interpret written passages from academic, informational, and practical texts.
Sub-Content Areas:
- Key Ideas and Details (22 scored) — identifying main idea, supporting details, author's purpose, making inferences, summarizing
- Craft and Structure (14 scored) — text structure (cause/effect, compare/contrast, chronological), author's tone, point of view, vocabulary in context
- Integration of Knowledge and Ideas (3 scored) — evaluating evidence, comparing multiple sources, distinguishing fact from opinion
Question Types: Multiple choice, select all that apply, ordered response
Common Passage Types: Informational text (science/health), narrative/literary, persuasive/argumentative, practical documents (labels, charts, directions)
- For main idea questions: choose the answer that covers the whole passage, not just one paragraph
- For inference questions: the answer must be logically implied — not stated directly, but not a stretch
- For vocabulary-in-context: substitute each option into the sentence and choose the one that preserves meaning
- For author's purpose: use keywords — to inform (neutral language), to persuade (opinion + evidence), to entertain (narrative), to describe (sensory)
Mathematics
38 questions · 57 minutes · Numbers & Algebra, Measurement & Data · Calculator provided
The Mathematics section uses a basic four-function calculator (provided on screen). Focuses on applied math skills relevant to healthcare.
Sub-Content Areas:
- Numbers and Algebra (23 scored) — order of operations, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, proportions, solving equations, scientific notation
- Measurement and Data (11 scored) — unit conversions, interpreting tables/graphs/charts, statistics (mean, median, mode, range), probability
- Convert all units to the same system before solving
- When reading graphs, always check axis labels and scales
- For probability: P(event) = favorable outcomes / total possible outcomes
- Know Roman numerals used in medication orders: I=1, V=5, X=10, L=50, C=100
Science
50 questions · 60 minutes · A&P, Biology, Chemistry, Scientific Reasoning
Sub-Content Areas:
- Human Anatomy & Physiology (18 scored) — all 11 body systems, homeostasis, cell structure and function
- Biology (9 scored) — cell biology, genetics, DNA/RNA, mitosis/meiosis, evolution, ecosystems
- Chemistry (8 scored) — atomic structure, periodic table, chemical bonds, reactions, acids/bases, pH scale
- Scientific Reasoning (9 scored) — scientific method, experimental design, hypothesis, independent/dependent variables, data interpretation
Key Concepts to Know:
- Cell organelles and functions: mitochondria (ATP), ribosome (protein synthesis), nucleus (DNA), cell membrane (selective permeability)
- Homeostasis: negative feedback loops (body temperature, blood glucose regulation)
- DNA → RNA → Protein (central dogma); base pairing: A-T, G-C (DNA); A-U, G-C (RNA)
- Mitosis (somatic, 2 identical cells) vs. Meiosis (gametes, 4 unique cells, half chromosome count)
- pH scale: 0–6 (acid), 7 (neutral), 8–14 (base/alkaline). Blood pH is 7.35–7.45
- Scientific method: Observation → Question → Hypothesis → Experiment → Analysis → Conclusion
English & Language Usage
37 questions · 37 minutes · Conventions, Vocabulary, Writing
Sub-Content Areas:
- Conventions of Standard English (9 scored) — grammar, punctuation, spelling, capitalization, sentence structure
- Vocabulary Acquisition (9 scored) — context clues, word roots/prefixes/suffixes, connotation vs. denotation
- Knowledge of Language (15 scored) — effective writing, word choice, sentence clarity, transitions, paragraph organization
Grammar Essentials:
- Subject-verb agreement: singular subject = singular verb; plural subject = plural verb
- Pronoun-antecedent agreement: a pronoun must agree in number and gender with its antecedent
- Comma rules: after introductory clauses, in compound sentences (FANBOYS), in a series (Oxford comma)
- Apostrophes: possession (nurse's, nurses') vs. contractions (it's = it is; its = possession)
- Run-on sentences and comma splices — fix with a period, semicolon, or coordinating conjunction
Effective Writing:
- Choose the most concise, clear option — avoid redundancy and wordiness
- Transitions: addition (furthermore, additionally), contrast (however, nevertheless), cause (therefore, consequently)
- Parallel structure: items in a list must have the same grammatical form
- Formal vs. informal register: nursing/academic writing uses formal, objective tone
Exam Strategy & Timing
Pacing · Section order · Best practices for test day
Section Order (mandatory): Reading → Mathematics → Science → English & Language Usage
You receive a mandatory 10-minute break between Mathematics and Science. You cannot carry unused time from one section to the next.
- Flag and move on — if stuck on a question, flag it and return. Don't spend 3+ minutes on one item.
- Eliminate — cross out clearly wrong answers to improve your odds on difficult items
- No penalty for guessing — always answer every question. An unanswered question is automatically wrong.
- Calculator: A basic 4-function calculator is provided on screen for the Math section only. Do not bring your own.
- Review within sections: You may review/change answers within the active section while time remains. Once you close a section, you cannot return to it.
- Target score: Most nursing programs require 58–65% minimum composite. Aim for 70%+ to be competitive.
