About the ASVAB Word Knowledge Section
The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) Word Knowledge subtest is one of four sections that determine your Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT) score, the score that determines your basic eligibility to enlist in any branch of the U.S. military.
Format
- Paper-and-pencil ASVAB: 35 questions in 11 minutes
- CAT-ASVAB (computer-adaptive): 16 questions in 8 minutes
- Question type: Synonym identification — choose the word that means the same as the underlined word
Why It Matters
Word Knowledge is one of the four AFQT subtests (along with Arithmetic Reasoning, Mathematics Knowledge, and Paragraph Comprehension). Your AFQT score is reported as a percentile from 1 to 99 and determines whether you qualify to enlist. Higher scores open up more career options (MOS, Rate, AFSC).
