The ACT is a standardized college admissions test used by universities across the United States to assess academic readiness for college-level work.
Structure of the ACT
The test has four required sections and one optional section:
1. English

- 45 minutes
- Focus: grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, rhetorical skills, organization, and clarity.
2. Math
- 60 questions
- 60 minutes
- Focus: pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, and some trigonometry.
- Calculator allowed for the entire section.
3. Reading

- Focus: comprehension, main ideas, inference, tone, and detail recognition.
4. Science
- 40 questions

- Minimal outside science knowledge required. It is more about analyzing data quickly.
5. Writing (Optional)

Scoring
- Each of the four main sections is scored from 1 to 36.
- The Composite Score is the average of the four sections.
- The Writing section receives a separate score.
A competitive score for selective colleges is typically 28–36.
Total Testing Time
- Without Writing: about 2 hours 55 minutes
- With Writing: about 3 hours 35 minutes
Key Characteristics
- Faster pace than the SAT.
- Includes a dedicated Science section.
- More straightforward questions, less abstract reasoning compared to SAT.
- No penalty for guessing.
Bottom Line
The ACT measures speed, accuracy, grammar mastery, algebra readiness, reading comprehension, and data interpretation under time pressure.
