The CNA Prometric Exam is the certification test required to become a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in many U.S. states. The exam is administered by Prometric, a national testing provider that delivers nurse aide competency exams on behalf of state health departments.

The test evaluates whether a candidate can safely perform the basic skills required to work in hospitals, nursing homes, and long-term care facilities.

 CNA Prometric Exam Parts

The exam has two main sections:

 Written (or Oral) Examination

  • Multiple-choice format

  • Typically 60–70 questions

  • Time limit around 90 minutes

Covers:

  • Infection control

  • Safety procedures

  • Patient rights

  • Basic nursing skills

  • Communication

  • Mental health and social needs

  • Personal care skills

  • Anatomy basics

Some states offer an oral version for candidates who have reading challenges.

Clinical Skills Examination

This is the critical part.

Candidates must perform 5 randomly selected nursing assistant skills in front of a nurse evaluator.

Common skills include:

  • Handwashing (almost always tested)

  • Measuring blood pressure

  • Taking pulse and respirations

  • Transferring a patient

  • Bed making

  • Feeding a patient

  • Providing peri-care

  • Range of motion exercises

You must perform each step correctly and follow safety protocols. Missing critical steps can result in automatic failure.

⏱ Scoring & Passing

  • Must pass both the written and skills portions

  • If one section fails, only that section must be retaken

  • Results are typically available within days

  • Once passed, your name is placed on your state’s Nurse Aide Registry

 CNA Prometric Exam Outcome

The expected outcome of passing the CNA Prometric exam is:

  • Official Certified Nursing Assistant certification

  • Placement on the state Nurse Aide Registry

  • Eligibility for employment in:

    • Nursing homes

    • Hospitals

    • Assisted living facilities

    • Home health agencies

Long-term impact:

  • Entry point into healthcare careers

  • Foundation for LPN or RN programs

  • Increased earning potential compared to non-certified aides

 Tactical Insight
